Joint Fellowship Training ProgramFellowsTahira Kahn, Ph.D. Phone: 301-827-1966 Professional Background Dr. Kahn received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University, Canberra. She began the NCI-FDA Oncology Product Research/Review Fellowship program in October 2006. Research InterestsDr. Kahn is pursuing research into the molecular mechanisms by which tumor cells evade apoptosis and in developing targeted therapies that can overcome tumor cell resistance to apoptosis. She has investigated the preclinical use of novel combination biologics for the treatment of solid tumors using orthotopic primary tumor models, spontaneous and induced models of tumor metastasis, as well as transgenic and knockout mice. Dr. Kahn has employed various chemotherapeutic drugs/biologics combination strategies to modulate novel therapeutic targets to overcome apoptosis evasion mechanisms of tumor cells in various in vivo tumor models. Fellowship Experiences"I have thoroughly enjoyed my training at the FDA. Apart from research activities in my area of interest, I have been exposed to the regulatory and review practices of FDA regarding drug development. It has not only provided me with a global outlook on how drugs move from the bench to the clinic but I have also come to appreciate the great amount of work and scrutiny that goes into approving new drug applications for clinical use." Career Goals "I had initially planned on using my training at the FDA to better understand the regulatory requirements of translating novel discoveries in the laboratory into better and faster therapies for cancer patients. However, I have also enjoyed reviewing new drug applications for their potential clinical use and now feel that in addition to following a traditional research career, I may also look into positions that will expand my regulatory affairs expertise." |
