Joint Fellowship Training ProgramFellowsElizabeth Hsu, Ph.D., M.P.H. Phone: 301-796-2542 Professional Background Dr. Hsu received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and her M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health with a concentration in International Health. Dr. Hsu began the NCI Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program in September 2005. After attaining her M.P.H. through the program, she started work at NCI in June 2006 and at FDA in October 2006. Research InterestsDr. Hsu’s research at the FDA involves evaluation and assessment of diagnostic tests, specifically colposcopy for the diagnosis of cervical cancer. Her general research interests are in the use of biotechnology to improve health care delivery in underserved areas. Dr. Hsu works in FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Division of Imaging and Applied Mathematics, NIBIB/CDRH Laboratory for the Assessment of Medical Imaging Systems where she is learning how to appropriately evaluate diagnostic tests, both in comparison to a gold standard and in the absence of a validated truth. Fellowship Experiences"My participation in the NCI-FDA fellowship program has exposed me to the real world issues that arise when cancer screening and diagnostic devices are used in the general population. The fellowship has supplemented my background in preclinical research and my education in public health with actual application and dissemination of medical technology on a population level." Career Goals "I am interested in program and grants management, ideally with a focus on health care and medical technology for underserved populations. I hope to use my unique interdisciplinary background to assist researchers in various disciplines that ultimately have a common goal in improving health care and whose research efforts might be enhanced through collaboration." |
